An engagement session should be more than just a photoshoot. It gives you a chance to celebrate your relationship before the busyness of wedding planning sets in. As Boulder engagement photographers drawn to images that feel honest and lived-in, we believe your photos should feel like you, not overly posed versions of you.

Now, whether you’re going for a hike through the tall grass or the trails in Chautauqua Park, or grabbing a warm cup of coffee on one of Pearl Street’s many coffeshops, here’s a bit on how we can help you prepare for a session that feels relaxed and meaningful.

Choose a Location That Means Something

The most memorable engagement photos are the ones where your personality comes through. And here in Boulder, we’re lucky to have a mix of mountain views, charming city spots, and quiet trails that can easily match your vibe.

Some of our favorite Boulder engagement photo locations include:

  • Chautauqua Park – great for golden hour with wide open views
  • Lost Gulch Overlook – dramatic mountain backdrops just minutes away
  • Boulder Creek Path – woodsy and very peaceful, perfect for intimate images
  • Downtown Boulder/Pearl Street – for cozy coffee shop stops and a bit of urban charm

If you are still not sure where to go. We’re happy to jump on a call and recommend spots based on your story and the feel you’re looking for in your engagement photos.

Dress for Comfort, Confidence, and Connection

Your outfits should feel like you. Your main goal is to choose clothes that are comfortable and reflect your personality while allowing you to elevate your look for images that will feel timeless. Movement and textures photograph really well, especially against Boulder’s natural backdrops.

A few tips to help you choose:

  • Go for soft neutrals and earth tones (they work beautifully in nature)
  • Layer up, especially in case the weather changes quickly, and here in Colorado, that could be minutes.
  • Skip logos and anything you’ll be tugging or adjusting the whole time.
  • If you bring two outfits, try one casual and one dressy for variety.

And yes, this does mean you can absolutely pair hiking boots with a flowy dress. Some of our favorite photos are the ones that find that Colorado blend of practical and beautiful, which attracts so many to these landscapes.

Timing Matters, Especially for the Light on the Landscape

We recommend aiming for your session to take place during the golden hours of the day, in that dreamy window of 40 to 50 minutes, just after sunrise or before sunset, when the sky can rapidly take on many different colors as the light shifts through these beautiful landscapes.

Please keep in mind that the exact timing of the golden hour changes throughout the year, but we will gladly help you find the best time of day based on your desired location and the overall feel you would like the photos to capture.

Focus on Each Other, Not the Camera

We believe the best photos come from showcasing your real connection, and not worrying about achieving the perfect pose. So please don’t stress about how you’re standing or what your hands are doing; that where our job comes in to help guide you in a way that helps you two feel natural. We really want this to feel like you’re on a date, so we’ll use personalized prompts and intentional movement to help you relax, laugh, and just be yourselves.

Once we help you get warmed up to the camera, you’ll stop focusing on it; that’s when the real, authentic moments happen.

Add Personal Touches to Make It Yours

Want to bring your dog? A guitar? A picnic blanket? Please do, we encourage it. Personal details like these help tell your story more organically.

Some couples bring:

  • A blanket for cozy shots
  • Something tied to how they met or what they love doing together
  • Their pet (because they’re family too)
  • Props or outfits connected to a hobby or a shared interest

These personal things help your session feel more like a memory and less like a photoshoot.

Trust the Process (That’s What We’re Here For)

We’ve photographed a lot of couples over the years, and have learned that the best photos happen when you feel comfortable. That’s always our priority.

Sometimes that looks like embracing the crazy mountain wind. Other times, it means popping into your favorite bookstore on Pearl Street for a quiet break. Either way, you can just be together, smiling, laughing, and enjoying time with each other.

Final Thoughts: Show Up As You Are

Jess and I truly believe that the best photos don’t come from having the fanciest of outfits or a background in modeling in front of the camera. What will help the most end up with timeless photographs is being intentionally present with each other and a little bit of trust in the journey we will help you navigate. As your Boulder engagement photographers, we’ll meet you where you are, and that means showing up with care and creativity, learning the essence of what you desire from your photos, and helping you walk away with images that feel honest, romantic, and totally you.

FAQs: Boulder Engagement Sessions

What should we bring to the session?

A comfortable pair of shoes, even if you plan to swap them out for photos, a water bottle to stay hydrated, a few extra layers in case the weather shifts, as it often does here in Colorado, and of course, anything personal you’d like to include, like your pet(s), a blanket, or something meaningful to your story.

When’s the best time of year for engagement photos in Boulder?

Honestly, every season brings something different to these Boulder landscapes! With fall time comes the golden trees, summer offers long evenings, and snowy winter sessions can be so dreamy if you’re willing to bear a bit of cold. Spring is lovely too, especially around the creek.

Can we do more than one location?

Absolutely. Just let us know ahead of time so we can plan for travel between locations and light. Many couples like to pair a nature spot with something urban, like downtown Boulder.

What if we’re awkward in front of the camera?

That’s so normal. As an introvert, I feel you, and that’s also what we’re here for. Most couples tell us after the session that it felt way more fun and relaxed than they expected.

How far in advance should we book?

We recommend reaching out at least 2–3 months in advance, especially for dates in spring and fall when our schedules fill up quickly.
